Tuesday 27 April

The Theatres Trust

The Theatres Trust Conference 10 ‘Designing School Theatres’

Time: 9.30am - 12.30pm

Synopsis: Day two of The Theatres Trust's Conference 10 'Designing School Theatres'. Chaired by Guardian Journalist, Maev Kennedy. Registration takes place at 9.30am. At 10.00am the first session, 'School Theatres Imagined' includes presentations on schools theatres design. After a break at 10.45am, from 11.15am there is a debate on 'School Theatres Design Principles'. At 12.15pm Maev Kennedy will draw together the key issues in a short final session entitled 'Next Steps'.

Audience: The Theatres Trust conference sessions are targeted at education and theatre professionals, teachers, capital project managers, specifiers, architects, theatre consultants and theatre managers and technicians of educational institutions. Wexford Opera House

Wexford Opera House: a new home for the foremost Opera Festival in Europe and Opera in Ireland

Time: 1.00pm - 2.00pm

Speakers: David Stuttard, Technical Director, Wexford Opera House

Synopsis: A discussion about the concept and building of a new Opera House for Wexford and a first in Ireland. The relationships between client, architect and consultants during the build and the completed reality. Wexford Festival Opera has been running since 1951, playing a central role in the cultural life of Ireland and in the world of opera and arts internationally. The rebuilding of Wexford Opera House is one of Ireland's most important cultural projects of recent times. David Stuttard has been the Technical Director of Wexford Festival for the past 12 years and has seen the rebuilding of the new Opera House from inception to completion. He will illustrate a potted history of the Opera Festival and chart all the major decisions involved in this major rebuilding project including the relationships with the build team and how the building works as a finished project.

Audience: Anyone about to embark on a new theatre or arts centre build. Production and technical directors, acousticians (this building is near perfect acoustically) installers of theatrical technical systems (flying electrics etc) and equipment providers.

Use of Projection in Theatre

Time: 2.30pm - 3.30pm

Speakers: Chaired by Ken Bennett-Hunter, Consultant | Panellists: Dick Straker, Mesmer | Malcolm Mellows, XL Video

Synopsis: This session will address the practicalities of sourcing, scheduling, budgeting and managing the use of projection in theatre productions. What equipment do you need? What are the implications for the other technical creatives and the fit-up and technical schedules? Do you need dedicated staff or can the operation fit in with existing staff's duties and how can they be adequately trained? What are the touring and maintenance consequences? These, and more, questions will be addressed by the speakers who have between them vast experience of designing and implementing projection on theatre productions. There will be plenty of opportunity for attendees to ask questions and seek advice.

Audience: Anyone involved in or faced with putting together or managing a show featuring projection.

National Skills Academy

Accreditation: Preparing for the Future

Time: 4.00pm - 5.00pm

Speakers: Chaired by Rob West, Education & Curriculum Manager, National Skills Academy for Creative & Cultural Skills

Synopsis: This session will explore why accreditation in the industry is important. It will address changes to legislation, in particular issues surrounding 'green' legislation.

Audience: Theatre managers, technical managers, technical crew and students.

What's the Damage?

Time: 10.30am - 11.30am

Synopsis: A session on the legal requirements and practicalities of inspecting work equipment used in the entertainment industry. The workshop will concentrate on lifting accessories and PPE for work at height though the principles can be applied equally well to other areas, for example access equipment. There will also be an opportunity to apply the knowledge and decide if gear is safe to use, requires a second opinion or is destined for the skip!

Audience: If you use PPE for work at height, are a flyman or rigger this session is for you!

Ear To The Ground

The Warehouse Project: from Car-Park to Nightclub: the Story behind this Club Phenomenon

Time: 12.00pm - 1.00pm

Synopsis: The Warehouse Project grosses in excess of £1.5m in ticket sales and features household names such as Fat Boy Slim, Groove Armada, 2 Many DJs and Faithless. Normal? No. The venue is an underground car-park right under Manchester Piccadilly railway station and on a Friday night at 6pm, 500 cars depart and world class production and artists arrive, followed by an audience of 2,000 at 10pm. Find out how from Jon Drape former production chief at The Hacienda and now live director of award-winning events and live communications agency Ear To The Ground.

How to Harness the Creative Industries: Key Issues

Time: 3.00pm - 4.00pm

Speakers: Helen Heathfield, Director of Energy Management, Julie's Bicycle

Synopsis: Julie's Bicycle will look at the key sustainability issues in the creative industries and how the organisation has approached these challenges. The session will look at the opportunities, and at the limitations, and what is now needed to embed a low carbon infrastructure into cultural experiences.

Audience: All those with a responsibility for, or interest in sustainability issues in their companies, but also everyone who want to know why sustainability issues matter to the entertainment and creative industries, right across the events supply chain.
