Professor Harald Haas is a Fellow of the World Technology Network, his research was featured by TIME magazine as on one of the "50 Best Inventions in 2011" and his fascinating discoveries could transform the way we look at live event technology. We first spotted Harald at the TED Conference and we are thrilled to welcome him to PLASA Focus: Leeds 2013 to discuss how to use light, rather than radio waves, to transmit data. Could this change the way the live entertainment and installation industry functions?

Requirements for Data and Power Infrastructures for LED Stage Lighting - presented by ETC

Precis of Subject:

This talk explores the electrical and data demands of LED luminaires and leads to a discussion about how to design new systems that support both tungsten and LED luminaires in a rational way and the conversion of existing installations to allow the deployment of LED luminaires.

The talk looks at LED technology with particular regard to inrush and leakage current, preserving the green benefits of lower powered lighting and giving lighting designers freedom to use new and old sources as they wish.

Audience participation is encouraged with some difficult questions expected.

In the last year, the UK has been host to several large-scale events, including the Olympic and Paralympic Games and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. Next year, Glasgow will host the Commonwealth Games. How do lighting designers approach such events? In addition to the design brief, what technical and logistical aspects need to be taken into consideration? This seminar will explore the lighting designer's role, the use of technology, and the importance of collaboration, innovation and imagination when designing large-scale events.
